Vegemite banned in the US? |
|
Filed under: Dessert, Australia, Did you know?, America I have no love for Vegemite. It is one of those foods that you really have to grow up with in order to have even slight chance of enjoying it. The processed yeast spread, or a similar product (the debate over the finer points of the products is a heated topic among fans) called Marmite, is most often enjoyed by Australians, New Zealanders, Britons and South Africans although you will occasionally come across an additional handful of people who enjoy it, as well.
Even though I am not a fan, I have no problem with anyone else who chooses to eat it, but unfortunately for anyone who lives in the US, Vegemite does not seem like it is an option anymore. The US has begun to rather strictly enforce a ban on the product due to the fact that it contains folate, which the US allows only to be added to breads and cereals. There have been reports of Vegemite-loving Aussie expats being searched for the product when crossing the US borders and retailers have been asked to stop carrying it in their stores.
So, what is a Vegemite fan to do? Try to find an importer who is still getting their shipments past customs and stock up. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
