Exploring the Cabernet Sauvignons of Atlas Peak |

Filed under: Wine  Laurie Daniel writing for the Mercury News has an interesting piece on why the Atlas Peak appellation in Napa Valley is worth looking for when searching for a Napa Cabernet. Atlas Peak, which is located in the hills on the eastern side of the valley, above the Stags Leap appellation is now turning out great Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are located high up and so they are above much of the fog yet have cooler temps and the rocky, volcanic soil is good for the grapes. Daniel attended a recent Atlas Peak Appellation Association tasting in Napa and found some favorites including:
2003 Atlas Peak Claret from Atlas Peak Vineyards, $86
2002 Arcturus from Astale e Terra, $39
2002 Elan Cabernet Sauvignon from Elan Vineyards, $50
2004 Krupp Brothers "The Doctor", $75
2003 Cobblestone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, $69
2004 Founder's Blend from the Jocelyn Lonen Winery, $85
2004, Bialla Cabernet Sauvignon, $93
